Tips to Help You When Social Distancing
With the spread of coronavirus, we’re being inundated with guidelines about how to keep ourselves and our families healthy and virus-free. One of the main prevention techniques is social distancing. While this practice will help protect our physical health, isolation can definitely take a toll on our mental health. Being confined to our homes for an extended period of time and unable to see loved ones poses a risk to our mental and emotional wellbeing. We recommend these social-distancing practices to ensure positive mental health.
Stay connected to your friends
Utilize video chat and phone calls to maintain as much human contact as possible during social distancing. Download Skype or use FaceTime or just pick up the phone and send a text! A little bit of contact goes a long way.
Maintain a routine
With more free time in your day, you may be tempted to sleep in and stay in front of the TV all day. However, doing so can ensure that your mental health takes a steep nosedive. Try to maintain as much of your routine as possible. Wake up at the same time every day, get dressed even if you’re working from home, and schedule time in for exercise.
Limit your exposure to the news
We’re not recommending that you avoid the news altogether, but try not to obsess over the constant updates surrounding the coronavirus. Instead, stay up-to-date by choosing a small window of time to watch the news or read internet articles (from reliable sources). Fill the rest of your day with positive and healthy habits.
Be kind
It’s important to be kind to yourself during these challenging times – and others! Remember that this is an unusual time for us all and there is no right or wrong way to feel.
